Productivity Principle 4…

“If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, then you don’t know what you are doing” – Edward Demming

If you cant describe the activities that you must do in this very specific way, then you will never be able to do it with maximum effectiveness or efficiency.

(One of the distinguishing qualities of the New Professionals – and it doesn’t take much time to learn)

Process Management means systematizing your regular activities.

Process mapping or workflow diagrams.

I’m sure wikipedia can do a perfectly good job of explaining this…

But my added contribution is to emphasise the great Edward Demmings point made above.

process-example

That if you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, then you do not know what you are doing…

Ouch.

You see, truth be told, professionals get by on far lower productivity levels than they could and would if only they had their regular tasks locked-down into a process format.

Learn how to build these maps and get a decent software tool such as OmniGraffle for the Mac, and consolidate and automate your important and regular activities into processes.

And remember:

“If you can’t describe what you are doing as a process, then you don’t know what you are doing” – Edward Demming

Develop the habit of asking yourself:

Can I describe what I’m doing as a process?
